  How effective is EMDR therapy?

EMDR was researched and developed in 1989 by Francine Shapiro, Ph.D. in Palo Alto, California. Since then it has been research-validated more than any other treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The results show that EMDR has an 80-90% success rate for single-event traumas in 1-3 ninety minute sessions. For those who have experienced more trauma, abuse or neglect earlier in life, it takes longer than 1 to 3 sessions. The number of sessions needed is proportional to the amount of the difficulties experienced, but clients report it is more effective and efficient than the “talk therapy” they had previously experienced.

EMDR has been accepted as a treatment for PTSD by the American Psychological Association and the American Psychiatric Association, as well as the Department of Defense and the Veteran’s Administration.
