Brainspotting Protocol Therapy
and Treatment
Brainspotting Protocol (BSP) is an interesting therapy developed by a very experienced and creative EMDR therapist, David Grand, Ph.D. In the late 90's, Dr. Grand began slowing the Eye Movements of EMDR with his clients; and as he did so, he followed a hunch one day and decided to ask the client to hold her eyes in one position. (The full story of this full discover can be found in the article listed below.) As he continued to explore this new approach, he experimented with various ways to guide a client to choose a stationary spot for their visual focus. Simultaneously he guided them to continue with trauma processing, mindful of memories, emotions and physical sensations which might arise. The results were very profound. He called it “brainspotting” because he believes it accesses memories stored in a localized area of the brain. (Have you noticed how people’s eyes scan around when they are trying to remember something? In some regards, the eyes are to the brain like the mouse is to the computer. They seem to help open files and close them so fast, as they search for their relevant information.)
Initial research on Brainspotting is in process. Until more is completed, Brainspotting Protocol is considered an experimental therapy.
“Brainspotting is based on the profound attunement of the therapist with the patient, finding a somatic cue and extinguishing it by down-regulating the amygdala. It isn’t just PNS (Parasympathetic Nervous System) activation that is facilitated, it is homeostasis.” - Robert Scaer, MD, “The Trauma Spectrum”
Many clients have found it to be effectively gentle and deep for trauma processing, and uniquely focused for performance enhancement work. Sports figures, performing artists, and other highly-motivated professionals have been assisted by BSP to bring their art or sport to a higher level of success. Our trained Brainspotting Protocol Therapists would be glad assist you, too, in your endeavors toward personal excellence.
