San Diego Therapist Specialties:
Gay and Lesbian Issues
Short List of Problems Specific to Gays and Lesbians
- Life outside the mainstream
- Dealing with non-acceptance, fear, hate and discrimination
- Lingering pain or self-rejection from childhood experience
For many gays and lesbians, growing up was a time of confusion. For others, keeping secret, feeling different or isolated took a toll. Even while life "out of the closet" today may be happy and successful, there can be residue from the past which may be harming or undermining you.
Our trauma therapy specialists encourage you to confront the effects of your negative self-beliefs which developed during childhood, or from any traumatic experiences. The distress of traumatic memories can be significantly reduced through trauma therapy (EMDR is the most researched trauma therapy for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). For more info, see PTSD.
We know that selecting an experienced therapist who has an appreciation and sensitivity to the experience of being gay in our society is essential. You may want to investigate therapy resources in the LGBT community - www.thecentersd.org and www.gsdba.org.
We also invite you to call one of our specialists listed on the top right section of this page.
