Group Therapy guided by experienced Therapists in San Diego

Group therapy is a form of psychotherapy that is guided by a therapist serving a group of people, rather than one individual. It includes any therapeutic process that takes place in a group setting, including psycho-educational groups (about such topics as communication, parenting, or self-care for stress); support or growth groups (such as a Rape Support Group or Adult Children of Alcoholics Group), and skills training groups (such as anger management, assertiveness training, mindfulness, relaxation training or social skills training). It can also include expressive therapies such as art, dance or music therapies which explore communication beyond words.

Group therapy is focused on beneficial change by developing, exploring and examining interpersonal relationships within the group.

How Group Therapy can help you:

  • It can give you a supportive, safe, and intimate social environment for group members.
  • Group therapy provides group members the opportunity to develop positive relationships and repair damage to their sense of control and self-esteem.
  • Group members share their experiences and feelings with others, which decreases their sense of isolation and validates the impact of their personal experiences.
  • They also may provide each other with feedback based on similar experiences and learn about problem solving, trusting their peers and community spirit. This can sometimes help you see something in yourself that limits you without your awareness.

KEY POINT: Everything that takes place in the therapy group is confidential.

What to expect in Group Therapy
The structure for group therapy may vary, but usually consists of a small group of people meeting weekly to discuss their feelings and concerns and to give support to one another. Group therapists are licensed professionals who are specially trained in group therapy. The therapist acts as facilitator. There is a great deal of interaction and discussion among members in the group.

The membership of various therapy groups can reflect the needs or interests of many different people. Sometimes the group specializes in people who have the same condition or circumstances. In “mixed groups” the group will be composed of people who have a variety of issues.

How do I know if Group Therapy is for me?
Like individual therapy, group therapy can help people suffering from many distressing conditions, such as addictions, anxiety, attention deficit disorder, depression, eating disorders, family problems, parenting issues, etc.

In some cases, people who are taking part in group therapy will also undergo individual counseling (one-on-one with a therapist). Thus, it’s not always necessary to choose one or the other. One can definitely benefit from both, especially when there is a strong need for support and a desire for change.

To learn more, call a group therapy specialist and ask the particular questions you have. We have groups listed here which we hope can match your needs. Please call one of our specialists for more details today.
